“It was so quick and easy to follow. I didn’t have the confidence or knowledge to create this and submit it to my HR — this has done it all for me. I feel confident handing it over, and relieved that I’ll have more money during my maternity.”
Hannah
Teacher, academy
“I put hours into making a plan myself using your guidance — this does all the work for you. It’s really clear what dates need to go into the forms, and the checklist is great.”
Serena
Teacher, LA maintained school
“Being able to look at the different alternatives to the blocks is really good. You’d think taking all the holidays is better, but obviously not when you’re on 50% pay — it was reassuring to know I was maximising my pay, which is the ultimate goal.”
Abi
Teacher, academy
“Easy to navigate, and the reassurance of completing everything correctly.”
Emma
Teacher, LA maintained school
“Knowing my gross and net pay per month.”

A clear starting point
Teacher maternity leave can involve statutory pay, school policies, holidays and Shared Parental Leave. Hannah's guide explains what to check, how the options fit together and where to get reliable advice.
Read the teacher maternity leave guideAnswer a short questionnaire and check your school holiday dates. Your free result shows whether SPL could create more full-pay holiday weeks and estimates the gross-pay difference. Teacher Support gives you the calculations, figures and dates for your forms and generates your SPL intent and booking notices; you may need to copy details into your school’s own forms. Teacher Support + adds support with all maternity and SPL forms and policies plus two Expert Reviews. Maternly never sends anything to your school.
Yes. School calendars vary, especially for academies and independent schools. Check every closure date against your own calendar before confirming it. Maternly uses these dates to calculate payroll returns, SPL blocks, estimated pay and document dates, so a wrong date can change the whole plan.
If eligible, ending maternity or adoption leave early makes the remaining leave available as SPL. Ending maternity or adoption pay, or Maternity Allowance, early makes the remaining statutory pay available as ShPP. SPL can be taken in blocks, so some teachers may return to normal contractual pay during school holidays between blocks. This may increase gross pay, but is not guaranteed. Check with HR or payroll.
Maternly supports teachers in England and Wales. It applies Burgundy Book maternity pay where that scheme forms part of your employment terms, and you can enter a custom policy for an academy or independent school. Check the estimate against your contract and current school policy. Scotland and Northern Ireland are not currently supported.
Yes — your partner does not have to take SPL or ShPP. You must both still meet the eligibility rules. Maternity or adoption leave must end early to make the remaining leave available as SPL. Maternity or adoption pay, or Maternity Allowance, must end early to make the remaining statutory pay available as ShPP. Your partner will normally need to sign a declaration. Check your circumstances with the official GOV.UK eligibility checker.
It can reduce the number of paid weeks left for you. The ShPP available to your family depends on how much Statutory Maternity Pay, Statutory Adoption Pay or Maternity Allowance has already been used. Each paid week allocated to your partner leaves one fewer for you. Add their paid weeks to Maternly because this may change the recommended plan.
Possibly, but only if maternity leave has not already started. Maternity leave starts no later than the day after your baby is born. It can also start automatically after pregnancy-related sickness or a health-and-safety suspension in the four weeks before your due week. School holidays do not delay it. If changing a start date already given to school, you normally need 28 days’ notice.
Not necessarily. If you are eligible, you can end maternity or adoption leave early and use the remaining leave as SPL within the first year. You can also end maternity or adoption pay, or Maternity Allowance, early and use the remaining statutory pay as ShPP. You will normally need at least eight weeks’ notice. An employer notice ending leave or statutory pay is usually binding, so check your eligibility and dates before sending it.
The usual rule is at least eight weeks. Your entitlement notice must normally arrive eight weeks before your first SPL, your curtailment notice must give eight weeks before maternity or adoption leave ends, and each booking notice must arrive eight weeks before that SPL block starts. Use the personalised deadlines in your dashboard and check your school’s process.
Your school cannot refuse a valid request for one continuous block, but it can refuse one notice requesting several separate periods. For up to three blocks, Maternly creates one continuous booking notice per block. Each normally uses one of your three booking-or-change notices, so using all three may leave no spare notice for a later change. Check with HR or your union before submitting.
KIT means Keeping in Touch. You can agree up to 10 KIT days while still on maternity or adoption leave, but not during compulsory maternity leave immediately after birth. SPLIT means Shared Parental Leave in Touch. Each employee can agree up to 20 SPLIT days during a booked SPL period — not during an ordinary working gap between blocks. Agree the work and payment with your school; even part of a day counts as one.
Use Edit your plan in the dashboard. Maternly will recalculate your strategy, pay estimate, key dates and actions. Documents that no longer match are marked as out of date, so regenerate them before use. Editing Maternly does not change paperwork already sent to HR — you must tell your employer separately and check the notice deadline.
Most teachers need a notice to their employer ending maternity or adoption leave and statutory pay, a notice of entitlement and intention with both parents’ declarations, and a booking notice for each SPL block. If you receive Maternity Allowance, notice to end it goes separately to Jobcentre Plus, not your school. Your school may use its own forms or ask for supporting evidence. Your ordinary maternity notification and MATB1 are separate, so check its policy.
Teacher Support creates a draft notification-and-intention form and a separate booking notice for each saved SPL block. It gives you the calculations, figures and dates to copy into your school’s own forms where needed. Teacher Support + adds support with all maternity and SPL forms and policies. Automatic completion depends on the form, and you must still check every document and complete declarations, signatures and personal details. Unrelated payroll, grievance and general HR paperwork is not included.
Your Maternly document pack remains available. If an uploaded school form cannot be completed safely, the original stays unchanged and is never labelled as completed. With Teacher Support +, a reviewer can explain what still needs doing and may provide an amended version where the form is supported.
No. Maternly provides planning guidance, estimated pay and draft documents; it does not submit them or guarantee acceptance. Your school, trust, local authority or payroll provider may apply its own policy or request different paperwork. Check every final date and document before sending it.
Teacher Support + includes one initial Expert Review and one follow-up. A review is used only when you confirm and submit a fixed plan-and-document set; editing drafts or uploading files does not use one. A reviewer checks that submitted version for obvious issues or missing information. The outcome appears in your review portal, but acceptance is not guaranteed.
We recommend using the first before your baby arrives, once your holiday dates, proposed SPL blocks and documents are ready. Birth-dependent dates will still be provisional. After birth, add the actual birth date and confirm when maternity leave started. Check the recalculated dates and blocks, regenerate changed documents, then use the follow-up review before sending updated paperwork to school.
We aim to complete Expert Reviews within 24 calendar hours of receiving a complete submission, including weekends and bank holidays. If anything essential is missing, we will ask for it first; the 24-hour period starts once the required plan and documents are available. You can track progress in your review portal.
Teacher Support + support queries are prioritised, and we will send an initial response within 24 calendar hours, including weekends and bank holidays.
Paid Teacher Support and Teacher Support + access lasts 12 months from the original purchase date for that leave case. You can edit the plan and generate documents while access is active. Upgrading to Teacher Support + does not restart the 12 months. Existing saved documents and submitted reviews remain viewable afterwards, but new editing, generation or review requests require active access.
